Currently accepting new clients! As a therapist, I believe that every individual has the potential to heal, grow, and thrive. My approach to therapy is grounded in a trauma-informed, strengths-based, and solution-focused perspective. This means that I recognize the impact of trauma on individuals' lives, and I create a safe and supportive space where clients feel empowered to explore their challenges and develop strategies for healing and growth. Whether you are facing a major life transition, such as a job loss or divorce, or struggling with interpersonal conflicts, anxiety, or depression, I can provide guidance and support as you navigate these difficult experiences. My primary focus is on empowering clients to build resilience and manage these challenges effectively, while identifying solutions. Therapy can feel daunting to some, but I believe in empowering clients to take charge of their treatment journey, focusing on their strengths and resilience. Let's schedule a free 15-minute consultation and see if we're a good fit. We can then proceed to schedule an appointment. You've already taken the first step towards your wellness by looking for a provider. The time to make a change is now; your future self will thank you!
** Telehealth and In-Person appointments.** We all long for our experiences, feelings, and needs to be seen, recognized, and honored. I bring to our work deep respect for your concerns and suffering. I place the therapeutic relationship at the heart of our work together which I approach with curiosity and empathy. I am most interested in what your unique experience is, and I aim to listen deeply on our road toward understanding. A safe-enough space will help us to transform your patterns of experience that interfere with your ability to be compassionate with yourself, to build meaningful relationships, and to work and play creatively, in other words, to live a fulfilling life. I am humbled by the complexity of human existence and feel honored to work with individuals from different racial and cultural backgrounds, sexual and gender identities, as well as spiritual and religious affiliations. In addition to my private practice, I am an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School (part-time) and supervise psychology interns and psychiatrist fellows. I served as the co-chair of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology Graduate Student Committee helping young clinicians explore and develop their professional identities.
For nearly 15 years, I worked as a high school teacher, advisor, dean, and administrator. Working with adolescents was fun, rewarding, and dynamic. As a social worker, I have worked in college settings, residential substance use treatment, and a community mental health clinic. I have significant clinical experience supporting clients with depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use, and specialize in working with adolescents, college students and emerging adults. I bring a particular appreciation for the stage of life between childhood and full adulthood, an understanding of the pressures of this age range, and a wealth of experience helping people navigate the challenges of growing up. I feel comfortable working with people of all identities and backgrounds. I specialize in supporting adolescents and young adults, Jewish and other faith communities, and older adults. I strive to be culturally competent and curious as I learn about another person. I believe everyone needs to be heard and helped regardless of religion, creed, or political beliefs.

Hello, my name is Dr. Sarah O'Neil. I'm a psychiatrist (medical doctor who can prescribe) currently practicing entirely by telehealth. I am passionate about my work. I am warm and real. I will greet you with a smile, and talk to you like a fellow human. In addition to medication and evidence based therapies, I use humor, irreverence, thought provoking quotes, essays, websites, apps and video clips to introduce concepts such as self care, self compassion, boundary setting and effective coping skills. I provide a thorough initial assessment over the first several appointments, during which time we each figure out if we are a good match for working together. At the completion of the initial assessment, if we agree to work together, I will present a menu of reasonable treatment options that may include medication as well as CBT, DBT and mindfulness based therapy. If you are seeking professional help and are ready to engage collaboratively in an environment of hope and non-judgment to understand yourself through the lens of compassion, we may be a good fit. The best way to arrange an intake is to call my work phone: 617-622-3990. I have been treating/collaborating with/ advocating for college students for my entire career. I see people who have mood disorders, all the anxiety disorders (e.g. generalized anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, social phobia) I also have expertise in assessing and treating people with eating disorders. There is a question below about communities I support. All are welcome in my practice. Hate has no place in my office. I have experience supporting people who have felt the effects of weight or mental health stigma, as well as working mothers and women with or a history of post-partum depression.
Good therapy happens when you feel respected and understood. Transformation comes through honest dialogue with your therapist. My style is collaborative and interactive. I listen, I talk, we interpret and untangle; together we identify goals, overcome obstacles, and make positive change. Guided by the principles of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy - by the belief that our pasts shape our values and feelings, and impact our relationships - I provide individualized talk therapy for life transitions and stressors including Trauma, Loss, and Relationship and Existential Issues across the lifespan. Whether facing in-the-moment or long term concerns, therapy provides a unique and professional third-party perspective. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and I am a proud queer therapist with a deep commitment to supporting LGBTQIA+ clients through both internal struggles and the very real weight of societal pressures. I have worked across a range of settings, including health promotion, Mass General Brigham, and group practice. I draw from an eclectic blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Humanistic Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Feminist Therapy—tailoring my approach to what fits you. I hold a Master's in Psychology from Boston College, where I have returned as an adjunct professor of the practice. I bring that same teaching orientation into my work with clients—helping you understand the skills, frameworks, and coping strategies behind what we explore together. My priority is to help you find relief as soon as possible, and to understand the deeper roots of what brought you here in order to sustain feeling better. I view sessions less as a clinical appointment, and more like an honest conversation with someone genuinely in your corner. I'd love to connect—feel free to reach out to schedule a consultation together!
