Hi! I provide outpatient therapy virtually. My style can be described as direct, compassionate, and goal oriented. I don't want you to feel like you're just venting and talking in circles (unless you're needing sessions to just vent vs change). I take a collaborative approach where we will decide together what goals are best and what we want to do to meet those. I can support you in working through a multitude of things from perfectionism, stress management, relationship struggles, trauma, and chronic suicidal ideation or struggles with self harm. Building trust and you feeling seen and understood are absolute priorities in care.
My name is EJ Joyner, I believe that every individual has the ability to change, grow, and work through life’s struggles. My job as your therapist is to partner with you to foster healing, introspection, and growth, and utilize the strengths you already possess while building upon them. I believe that you are the expert on what you need, I am simply a partner to help you get there. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate with a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University. My foundation is a collaborative and non-judgmental, person-centered approach to ensure clients feel empowered through their journey. Additionally, I utilize various evidence-based, or scientifically backed, techniques as needed for the client such CBT, mindfulness, and attachment theory. I enjoy working with a range of ages and concerns, including stress, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, relational and social issues, trauma history, other significant life changes, and more. My priority is to create a safe, respectful environment for clients in which they feel understood and heard. When you are ready, I will meet you where you are in your change process and walk with you along the way.

My goal is to support you in your journey of personal growth, healing, and empowerment, so you can become more resilient and your best self. Hey and Welcome! As a therapist, my goal is to create an emotionally safe space, that is intersectional and inclusive, to pursue personal healing and self-discovery. Through our work, we will identify how the experiences you have had in your life have impacted who you are in this world and how you relate to others. We will explore the emotional, mental, and systemic barriers that get in the way of evolving into the person you'd ideally like to be, while simultaneously developing a deep respect and reverence for the various versions of you over time that were forced to be resilient through difficult and challenging circumstances. I support clients who are seeking coping tools to create and maintain a sense of emotional stability. My clients are often pursuing healing from trauma, whether it be attachment based childhood trauma or a specific and recent traumatic experience. I specialize in working with LGBTQIA+ folx, women, and various issues that impact folx of the global majority. Therapy invites us to take up space, prioritize caring for ourselves, and create a life that feels worth living. Seeking support is not an easy decision and the fact you've made it this far is significant. If you'd like to learn more about me, the work I do, and my approach to therapy, please reach out to schedule a consultation appointment.

Many of the students I work with are going through times of change, pressure, or uncertainty. You might be trying to balance school, relationships, and future plans, all while dealing with stress, anxiety, or questions about who you are. Maybe you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like no one really sees what you're carrying. I work best with students who are ready to explore those feelings in a safe, honest space, even if they’re not sure where to start. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be open to looking inward and having real conversations. Whether you're dealing with relationship issues, identity questions, trauma, or the day-to-day weight of being a student, you're not alone. I’m here to listen without judgment, help you make sense of what you’re feeling, and support you in moving forward with more clarity and self-trust.
Do you feel anxious, depressed, or stuck in a difficult season of life? Have you lost your sense of self, or feel paralyzed by shame? Life can be difficult, but it doesn't have to stay that way. Whether you're navigating anxiety or a difficult season of life; struggling to balance school/life balance; or just trying to "adult" - you deserve support! Together, we'll uncover what's going on beneath the surface and get you to a place where you can feel confident again. I'll help you identify potential triggers contributing to your distress, teach you coping skills to manage symptoms, and help you feel strengthened to take back control of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. While faith is not a requirement to work with me, I have found that many of my clients are in need of a safe space where they can openly express their Christian values. Upon request, I'm honored to incorporate faith into sessions to further support women in the mental health journeys.

I have specialized in working with college and university undergraduate and graduate students since my graduate training and I have worked in six different college and university counseling centers. I have innate knowledge about the experiences that are relevant to college and undergraduate students and it is my mission to provide support in helping navigate the journey during this integral time of development. I have experience supporting students through general academic stress and concerns as well as compounding stressors relevant to diversity, culture and identity. Finally, I understand the intersection that other factors have during the college and university experience (i.e., family, friend and romantic relationship building and conflict, social injustice, financial stress, career uncertainty, etc.)
Life can feel overwhelming. You might be carrying past trauma, facing anxiety that won’t ease, or navigating a lingering sadness. Maybe you’re exploring how your identity has been shaped by culture, history, or generational pain—and you’re ready to reclaim your voice. Whatever brings you here, I want you to know: reaching out is a powerful first step. As a therapist with over a decade of experience, I create a trauma-informed space where you feel seen and supported. Together, we’ll face the hard stuff while making room for healing, hope, and growth. I specialize in trauma, anxiety, depression, identity, and life transitions. My approach is rooted in decolonizing therapy—honoring how colonization, systemic oppression, and cultural narratives impact mental health. We’ll gently examine and unlearn internalized beliefs, reconnect with your resilience, and center your wisdom. This work isn’t just about surviving—it’s about liberation. I believe in the power of healing, especially in the face of profound pain. Therapy for me is about coming home to yourself—finding strength, wholeness, and meaning. If you're seeking someone who deeply listens, understands your complexity, and honors your story, I’d be honored to share this space.
